Approaches to Learning
Evidence 3.1 Demographic Diversity Perceived Problems and Advantages of Rural Schools in the US
When compiling my reflective paper on the perceived problems and advantages of rural schools in the US, I realized first and foremost that our current system was founded as rural education. Since our very beginning, our population and its growth has continually dealt with the same issues we do today: distance to travel, class size, enrollment, economics, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and teachers.
I believe the difference today, is global communication. The US immediately compares itself to the world in all aspects -from education to economics to hunger. The rural educational system has become a part of the entire US education system, good or underachieving - to be viewed and scrutinized as a whole - by world standards.
Evidence 3.2 Disabilities and IDEA
Instructional Strategies for Teaching
Because of my substitute teaching experience, I have had many opportunities for exposure to students with learning disabilities. Most of them have been clearly identified to me through teachers and the administration. It has been very important to know this initial identification, which to me is the first, most important issue when teaching students with learning disabilities. There are many IEP controversies and experimental classrooms currently being tried in Wisconsin. It will be interesting to see how these programs develop and become "mainstream" in classrooms across the US in the next few generations.
Evidence 3.3Approaches to Learning: Practicum Birth - 21
Middle Childhood Practicum Experience
Because of my Art content background, my practicum experience was easy to comprehend and understand. I could comfortably tell students that they could rely on me for help and guidance. They quickly grasped that I indeed could help them, and proceeded to ask questions and advice. This totally changed their respect level for me as a substitute teacher. The classes remained on task, were quiet, and we collectively enjoyed working on their projects. However, it reminded me that I still have a learning curve in my teaching Art on a daily basis, and that I will continue to gather as much information and technique as possible while I substitute and student teach.
