Classroom Management
Evidence 5.1 Reflective Paper on Classroom Discipline Procedures
As an older adult entering the teaching environment after twenty plus years in the corporate world, I know I have a mature sense of self that I definitely use to my advantage in my classroom management. My philosophy has been directly impacted by my years in the corporate environment; as well as, my extensive exposure as a substitute teacher.
I believe it is extremely important for all students, parents and administrators to have full knowledge of behavior expectations. Communication is critical for all. All must see and agree upon the use of a code of conduct.
I also believe that conflict resolution is especially essential in the Art classroom. Art projects should be conducted in a classroom that is kept physically clean and free of contention. Students should be allowed to relax and be as creative as possible.
Again, communication is the key to conflict resolution. When the code of conduct is ignored and resolution is necessary, the first reaction should be to contain the situation and to not elevate the level of conflict. Students must quickly understand the steps that will be taken to resolve behavior issues. Consistent methods that apply to each and any student must be used. This is especially true knowing the state of conflict in our schools today. Students need to feel safe in their learning environment - to me, it is one of the most important issues in our classroom management today.
